Ethiopian & Gregorian Calendar
Ethiopian & Gregorian Calendar
YeneSchool is built for Ethiopian schools and fully supports the Ethiopian Calendar (EC). All dates — attendance records, fee due dates, timetables, and report card terms — can be displayed in either EC or Gregorian (GC) format depending on your school's setting.
How Calendars Are Configured
Your school administrator sets the preferred calendar type in School Settings. Most Ethiopian government and private schools use the Ethiopian Calendar by default.
!NOTE The Ethiopian Calendar is approximately 7–8 years behind the Gregorian Calendar and has 13 months: 12 months of 30 days each, plus a short 13th month (Pagume) of 5 or 6 days.
Ethiopian Calendar Month Names
| EC Month | Approximate GC Equivalent |
|---|---|
| መስከረም (Meskerem) | September – October |
| ጥቅምት (Tikmit) | October – November |
| ኅዳር (Hidar) | November – December |
| ታኅሣሥ (Tahsas) | December – January |
| ጥር (Tir) | January – February |
| የካቲት (Yekatit) | February – March |

How Academic Terms Map to Calendar Months
Ethiopian schools typically run three terms aligned to the EC academic year starting in Meskerem (September GC):
| Term | EC Months | Approx. GC Period |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 (1ኛ ሴሚስተር) | Meskerem – Hidar | Sep – Dec |
| Term 2 (2ኛ ሴሚስተር) | Tahsas – Megabit | Jan – Apr |
| Term 3 (3ኛ ሴሚስተር) | Miyazia – Sene | Apr – Jul |
!TIP If you ever see a date that looks incorrect, check whether your school is using Ethiopian or Gregorian calendar mode. The date display changes instantly when the administrator switches the setting.
