Smart NFC & RFID Attendance Kiosk Setup
Smart NFC & RFID Attendance Kiosk Setup
The YeneSchool Smart Attendance Kiosk transforms ordinary campus entry gates and bus boarding doors into rapid, contactless check-in stations. Students tap their NFC-enabled school ID badge, instantly recording their attendance timestamp and triggering optional automated SMS/Telegram check-in notifications to their parents.
1. Supported Reader Hardware
The kiosk software supports two operational modes:
Mode A: Plug-and-Play USB RFID Reader (Recommended for Desktop/Laptops)
- Any standard USB 13.56MHz (Mifare Classic / NTAG) or 125kHz RFID reader operating in HID Keyboard Emulation Mode.
- No driver installations required. When a card is tapped, the device emulates keystrokes followed by an
Enterkey. - Works across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chromebook terminals.
Mode B: Native Android Tablet with Web NFC (Mobile / Bus Terminals)
- Run Google Chrome on any Android tablet equipped with built-in NFC.
- YeneSchool uses the browser Web NFC API (
NDEFReader) for direct contactless chip communication without external dongles.
2. Enrolling Student Smart Cards
Before a card can be used at the gate, its unique chip serial number must be paired with the student record:
- Open Registrar Portal > Students > Select Student Profile.
- In the profile actions, click Assign Smart Card / RFID.
- Tap the physical ID card on your enrollment reader.
- The system captures the card UID (e.g.,
80:41:A2:7C). - Click Save Card Binding. The card is now permanently linked to the student across all campuses and school buses.
3. Deploying the Gate Kiosk Screen
To operate an unattended turnstile or gate check-in point:
- Open
https://your-school.yeneschool.me/attendance/kioskin full-screen browser mode (pressF11). - Log in with a Gate Security or Registrar account.
- Select the active campus gate (e.g., Main Front Entrance, KG Branch Gate).
- Lock the screen into Kiosk Mode:
- The interface displays the live date in both Ethiopian (EC) and Gregorian (GC) calendars.
- When tapped, the screen flashes green with the student's photo, name, and class section, and plays an affirmative audio chime.
- If an unassigned or invalid card is tapped, the screen flashes amber with an error tone, prompting the student to visit the registrar.
